Biomedical Research Award

The Barcelona Biomedical Research Award rewards innovative solutions based on biomedicine that can ultimately change the way diseases are treated and provide new tools for physicians with large benefits to patients.

Open to companies, academic and private researchers from European and non-European countries, the Barcelona Institute for Research in Biomedicine aims to honor the best international innovations. Proposals will be evaluated in two areas: Early clinical stage project Award and Best product / deal Award for application in diagnostic, therapeutic or regenerative medicine.

Award Information

All applications will be reviewed by industry specialists with extensive experience in R&D and commercial roles. The medical review committee are:

  • Pedro Beissau – Head of Business Development CEAP

  • Mary Tricoli – VP Corporate Dev & CEO Barcelona IBR.

  • Jeff Kung – formerly Chief Technology Officer of UBK Therapeutics, Inc and member of the Biomedicines Alliance

  • Olivia Fox Havel – former Senior Research Fellow at Eli Lilly and Chairman of the Biomedicines Alliance

The Barcelona Institute for Research in Biomedicine together with an EU funded consortium named ENATRANS are organizing the 2016 edition of the Biomedical Award. The winners of the Award will receive media coverage across Europe and get visibility to EU decision makers from biotechnology, pharma, and finance.

The Award Process

  • Call for Proposals opens July 15, 2015 and ends September 15, 2015

  • Evaluation of Proposals during September

  • Notification sent to finalists in October

  • Finalist Selection will be finished in the third week of October 2015

  • Final Scientific Review will be finished in November

  • Award Ceremony and presentation of the winning projects during BioMed Europe 2016 in Barcelona in January 2016

The Winners

The winners each will receive $100,000 and a trophy, uniquely designed for each winner by Stefan Sagmeister.

It strongly illustrates the dynamism and the excellence of the research in the biomedicine field. We wish great success to the winners, similar to former winners rewarded Biomedical Research Award in 2015, and the fastest way possible to help patients

Created in 2006, The Barcelona Biomedical Research Award is an initiative led by Industry and set up together with the European Commission to address the applications of biomedicine to achieve breakthroughs in healthcare. The Award is sponsored by Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, The EBD Group and Alliance for Biomedical Research in Europe (BioMed Alliance)
